What Does a Customer Acquisition Cost Calculator Calculate?
A customer acquisition cost calculator converts your marketing and
sales spend into a per-customer dollar figure, then pairs it with
customer lifetime value to judge whether your growth is
economically sustainable. The result is the LTV:CAC ratio — the single
most important metric for scaling a customer-driven business.
Key CAC & LTV calculations
Total Acquisition Cost: Marketing + sales + advertising + other acquisition costs.
CAC: Total cost ÷ new customers acquired.
Effective Lifetime: Derived from churn (1 ÷ churn rate) or entered lifetime when churn is 0.
Lower payback is safer for cash flow. SaaS benchmarks often target payback within 12 months; enterprise SaaS may allow 18–24 months.
7. Profit per customer
Profit per Customer = LTV − CAC
8. Efficiency score (0–5)
A weighted composite of the LTV:CAC ratio and payback period. It is a directional
indicator — never a substitute for cohort-level analysis.
Important assumptions
Revenue per customer and gross margin are treated as constant across the lifetime.
Churn is assumed constant; real churn often varies by cohort and age.
Expansion revenue (upsells, cross-sells) is not modeled separately.
Attribution of costs across channels is not modeled — enter blended totals.
Taxes, financing costs, and CAC-loaded commissions are not separated.
This is a screening estimate, not a financial statement analysis.

Frequently Asked Questions About Customer Acquisition Cost
What is Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC)?
Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC) is the total cost of acquiring a new customer, calculated by dividing all marketing, sales, and advertising expenses by the number of new customers acquired during the same period.
What is a good LTV:CAC ratio?
A common benchmark is an LTV:CAC ratio of 3:1 or higher. Ratios below 3:1 may indicate that acquisition costs are too high relative to customer value, while ratios above 5:1 may suggest underinvestment in growth.
How is Customer Lifetime Value (LTV) calculated?
LTV can be estimated as Average Revenue per Customer × Effective Customer Lifetime × Gross Margin. When a monthly churn rate is known, the effective lifetime is often approximated as 1 divided by the monthly churn rate.
What is CAC payback period?
CAC payback period is the number of months required for the gross profit from a customer to equal the cost of acquiring that customer. It is calculated as CAC divided by monthly gross profit per customer.
Why is CAC important for SaaS and subscription businesses?
For subscription businesses, CAC determines how much can be profitably invested in growth. Pairing CAC with LTV and payback period shows whether unit economics support scaling marketing and sales spend.
