What Does a Crypto Profit Calculator Calculate?
A crypto profit calculator — also called a
crypto ROI calculator or Bitcoin profit calculator —
converts the prices and quantities of a cryptocurrency trade into the metrics that
matter for decision-making and tax reporting: net profit, ROI, annualized return, and
after-tax profit. It also surfaces the cost basis and
taxable gain, which are the two inputs the IRS requires for
capital-gains reporting.
Key crypto profit calculations
Total Buy Cost: Number of tokens × buy price.
Total Sell Value: Number of tokens × sell price.
Cost Basis: Total buy cost + buy fees (the amount you invested).
Gross Profit: Total sell value − total buy cost.
Net Profit: Gross profit − buy fee − sell fee − other costs.
ROI: Net profit ÷ cost basis × 100.
Annualized Return: CAGR of the after-fee return over the holding period.
Taxable Gain: Net profit if positive (losses are not taxed).
After-Tax Profit: Net profit − capital gains tax.
Who can use this crypto profit calculator?
Active Crypto Traders: Track P&L on every closed position.
Long-Term Bitcoin and Ethereum Holders: Evaluate multi-year returns on held positions.
Day Traders: Quickly compute profit after exchange fees on same-day trades.
Tax Filers: Estimate cost basis and taxable gain for Form 8949 reporting.
Financial Coaches and Accountants: Provide fast, defensible P&L estimates for clients.
METHODOLOGY
Crypto Profit Calculator Methodology
MoneyTool uses standard cost-basis and capital-gains mathematics consistent with US
tax conventions. The calculator is transparent about what it does and does not
estimate.
1. Cost basis and total buy cost
Total Buy Cost = Number of Tokens × Buy Price
Cost Basis = Total Buy Cost + Buy Fee
The buy fee is added to the cost basis, matching how the IRS treats acquisition costs of investment property.
2. Gross and net profit
Total Sell Value = Number of Tokens × Sell Price
Gross Profit = Total Sell Value − Total Buy Cost
Net Profit = Total Sell Value − Total Buy Cost − Buy Fee − Sell Fee − Other Costs
3. ROI
ROI = (Net Profit ÷ Cost Basis) × 100
ROI is the percentage return on the total amount invested, including buy fees.
4. Annualized return (after fees)
Annualized Return = [(Sell Value − Sell Fee − Other Costs) ÷ Cost Basis]365 ÷ Holding Days − 1] × 100
This normalizes the after-fee return to a yearly rate, allowing comparison across trades of different durations.
5. Tax treatment
Taxable Gain = max(0, Net Profit)
Tax Owed = Taxable Gain × Tax Rate
After-Tax Profit = Net Profit − Tax Owed
For US users, "Auto" mode classifies the trade as short-term if the holding period
is 365 days or less, and long-term if longer. US short-term gains are taxed at
ordinary income rates; long-term gains use preferential rates of 0%, 15%, or 20%.
Crypto losses are not taxed but may be deductible against other capital gains,
subject to annual limits.
Important assumptions
Single buy and single sell — one cost basis per trade.
Fees are entered as absolute currency amounts, not percentages.
Currency display is a symbol change only; values are not FX-converted.
State and local taxes, wash-sale rules, and net investment income tax are not modeled.

BEST PRACTICES
Tips for Crypto Profit Tracking
A clean record of every trade — with cost basis and fees — is the foundation of both
good trading decisions and accurate tax reporting.
📊
Track Every Trade
Keep detailed records of all crypto transactions — date, quantity, price, fees — for cost basis and IRS reporting.
💰
Include All Fees
Exchange commissions, network fees, and gas costs reduce your profit. Always include them.
📈
Understand Tax Rules
US: short-term gains (held ≤ 1 year) are taxed as ordinary income; long-term gains use 0%, 15%, or 20%.
🎯
Use a Consistent Cost Basis Method
FIFO, LIFO, and specific identification produce different taxable gains. Choose one and stay consistent.
🔄
Harvest Losses Carefully
Crypto is not currently subject to US wash-sale rules, but proposed rules may change this — verify annually.
✅
Consult a Tax Professional
Crypto tax rules vary by jurisdiction and change frequently. Verify with a licensed tax professional.

Crypto profit equals total sell proceeds minus the total cost basis (buy price × tokens + buy fees) minus sell fees and other costs. ROI is net profit divided by cost basis × 100.
What is cost basis in crypto?
Cost basis is the original value of an asset for tax purposes. In crypto, it includes the purchase price plus buy-side fees and certain other acquisition costs. Cost basis is used to compute capital gains or losses when you sell.
How is crypto taxed in the United States?
In the US, crypto is treated as property. Short-term capital gains (held one year or less) are taxed at ordinary income rates, while long-term capital gains (held more than one year) receive preferential rates of 0%, 15%, or 20% based on taxable income.
Do I need to report small crypto trades?
In the United States, every crypto sale, trade, or exchange is a taxable event regardless of size. Some countries have de minimis exemptions, but these vary widely and should be verified with a tax professional.
How does the annualized return work?
Annualized return normalizes the after-fee return to a yearly rate using CAGR over the holding period. It lets you compare trades of different durations on equal footing.
What is the difference between short-term and long-term capital gains?
In the US, short-term capital gains apply to positions held one year or less and are taxed at ordinary income rates. Long-term capital gains apply to positions held longer than one year and are taxed at preferential rates of 0%, 15%, or 20%.
