What Does a Currency Converter Calculate?

A currency converter — also called a foreign exchange calculator or FX calculator — converts an amount from one currency to another using an exchange rate. A good converter goes further: it separates the mid-market rate (the true reference rate) from the rate markup embedded by providers, and shows the net amount the recipient would actually receive.

Key currency conversion metrics

  • Live Mid-Market Rate: The current midpoint between interbank buy and sell rates — the fairest available reference rate.
  • Custom Rate: The exact rate your bank or provider quoted. Users can enter this manually for precise results.
  • Inverse Rate: The rate for converting in the opposite direction (1 ÷ rate).
  • Transfer Fee: A visible fee charged by the provider to send money abroad.
  • Rate Markup: A hidden fee applied as a worse exchange rate than mid-market.
  • Effective Rate: The rate you actually receive after any markup is applied.
  • Recipient Amount: The final amount the other side receives after all fees and markups.

Who can use this currency converter?

  • International Travelers: Budget foreign expenses in multiple currencies.
  • Freelancers and Remote Workers: Calculate incoming client payments in local currency.
  • Importers and Exporters: Price goods and services across borders.
  • International Investors: Convert amounts for foreign brokerage or real estate.
  • Remittance Senders: Understand the true cost of sending money abroad.
METHODOLOGY

Currency Converter Methodology

MoneyTool uses standard FX conversion formulas with transparent fee and markup breakdowns. Live rates are fetched from a public, ECB-backed API; custom rates can be entered manually when comparing specific provider quotes.

1. Live rate sourcing

By default, the calculator calls the Frankfurter API (frankfurter.app), which republishes the European Central Bank's daily reference rates. These rates are the mid-market rates published by the ECB and updated once every working day around 16:00 CET.

2. Mid-market conversion

Converted Amount = Amount × Mid-Market Rate

3. Custom rate override

When the custom rate toggle is enabled, the entered rate replaces the mid-market rate for all calculations — including the effective rate, markup comparison, and final recipient amount. This is ideal for verifying an exact quote from a bank or transfer service.

4. Effective rate (after markup)

Effective Rate = Mid-Market Rate × (1 − Markup%)

When using a custom rate, markup is skipped (the custom rate is already the effective rate).

5. Transfer fee and net amount

Transfer Fee = Amount × Fee% (source currency)

Amount After Fee = Amount − Transfer Fee (source currency)

Final Amount Received = Amount After Fee × Effective Rate (target currency)

Important assumptions

  • Live rates cover ~30 major currencies. Some currencies fall back to reference rates when live data is unavailable.
  • Live rates are ECB reference rates, published once per working day. Intraday market moves are not reflected.
  • Banks and specialist services typically charge 0.5%–5% in total costs, with the global average around 6% per World Bank Remittance Prices data.
  • Correspondent bank fees and receiving bank fees are not modeled and can add $10–$30 on top.
  • Weekend and holiday rates can be materially worse than weekday rates.
  • This is a planning estimate, not a firm exchange-rate quote.

BEST PRACTICES

Tips for Getting the Best Exchange Rate

The advertised rate is only part of the story. Total cost — fees plus rate markup — determines what the recipient actually receives.

Compare to Mid-Market

The mid-market rate is the fairest reference. Anything worse is the provider's markup.

Use a Specialist Service

Specialist transfer services typically cost 1%–2% versus 3%–5% for traditional banks.

Enter Your Provider's Rate

Use the custom rate toggle to compare offers exactly — no assumptions.

Time Large Transfers

Rates move. For large amounts, consider a forward contract or limit order to lock in a target rate.

Factor in Receiving Fees

Some receiving banks charge fees on incoming transfers. Ask the recipient's bank.

Verify with a Licensed Provider

Use providers registered with FinCEN or your state's money transmitter regulator.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Currency Conversion

How often are the exchange rates updated?

The calculator fetches mid-market reference rates from the Frankfurter API, which is backed by European Central Bank reference rates published once every working day around 16:00 CET. You can also enter a custom rate manually if you are comparing a specific provider quote.

What is the mid-market exchange rate?

The mid-market rate is the midpoint between the buy and sell prices of two currencies in the wholesale foreign-exchange market. It is the fairest reference rate and is used by financial institutions when trading with each other.

Why is my bank's exchange rate different from the mid-market rate?

Banks and money transfer services add a markup to the mid-market rate to earn revenue. This hidden markup typically ranges from 0.5% to 5% for banks and specialist services, and can be significantly higher for retail exchange at airports or hotels.

Can I enter my own exchange rate?

Yes. Enable the "Use custom exchange rate" toggle to enter the exact rate your bank or provider has quoted. The calculator will then use that rate for all conversions and skip the automatic lookup.

What is a rate markup?

A rate markup is a hidden fee where the provider applies a worse exchange rate than the mid-market rate. The difference is kept by the provider as revenue. Some providers advertise zero fees while embedding their cost in the rate.

Which currencies does the converter support?

The live rates cover approximately 30 major currencies including USD, EUR, GBP, JPY, INR, AUD, CAD, CHF, CNY, and SGD. Additional currencies are supported using reference rates when live data is unavailable.

Is this currency converter free?

Yes. MoneyTool provides this currency converter free for educational and planning use.
